Rudy T. Runkle is afraid of growing up. Rudy is expected to “be a man” – but how can he be after he suffers the humiliation of failing his driver’s test on the day of his 16th birthday? All Rudy really wants is to get close to Maria, the beautiful Mexican-American girl who is his scene partner in high school drama class.
When Maria’s mother is unexpectedly deported, Maria follows her back to Mexico. Rudy then ditches school in search of her but is busted by his Grandpa Sam. When Rudy begs for his help, Grandpa Sam is unable to resist Rudy’s plea as well as his own longing for a youthful adventure. Grandfather and grandson hit the road in Grandpa’s ’57 Chevy, bound for Mexico and Maria.
In Mexico, things go wrong fast. Sam and Rudy are robbed by a gang of teen punks, have a run-in with the police and land in jail after a midnight Day of the Dead festival. With Grandpa Sam’s help, Rudy learns what it really means to be a man and stand up for what he believes in: family, adventure, and a world without borders.
